south charlotte coyote sightings grow

Cartoon coyotes are funny – the coyotes roaming South Charlotte neighborhoods are nolaughingmatter. For the past few months coyotes have become a bigger problem preying on household pets.

“Charlotte Officials haveidentified 15 clusters in Mecklenburg where five to 10 coyote sightings have been reported. The clusters are all over the county, with concentrations east and south of uptown, mostly along greenways, golf courses, creek beds and parks.Coyotes have been spotted just off Randolph Road near the Mint Museum, and on and around Charlotte Country Club.” read the complete story here at the Charlotte Observer

As of today wildlifeofficialsare stumped…

“State wildlife agents have trapped coyotes at Fort Bragg, near Fayetteville, for a rural coyote study, collaring them with GPS systems. They’ve tracked some coyotes moving as far north as the Washington, D.C., area, and southward into South Carolina, he said.”That shows they can travel for extensively long and great distances,” Matthew said.

Coyotes are in every U.S. state and every county in North Carolina, he said. Wolves, their only predator, are no longer around, so controlling food is the only way to control the population. The growing concern over the animals was triggered by reported attacks on dogs in neighborhoods along McAlpine Greenway Park in southeast Charlotte.”
